Wednesday, September 29th, 2010Fanboy Friday: Don’t Hold Your Breath
Friday, September 24th, 2010This week we’re going to do things a little differently. Normally we’d choose a t-shirt to gush over, but today we’re going to gush over a poster to commemorate the new posters available in our very own online shop!
This week’s poster design comes from Brian Ewing, my new favorite rock poster designer. His designs and illustrations have become so well-known and respected in the gig poster community that DC comics approached him to do a couple of comic book covers for Batman and Nightwing! The poster we’re focusing on is called “Don’t Hold Your Breath”. The style is eerie and the illustration is flawless, and the perspective on the leaves makes the image even more disorienting. This is a poster he originally designed for the band Brand New, and according to Ewing it is also the poster that gave him his first big break:
“I think the big break came when I designed a tour poster and background for the band Brand New. The band had just released an album and were about to get really big. I had no clue. I just liked them and the artwork I created really struck a chord with their fans. I went to see them play a few weeks after finishing the job and really didn’t know what to expect. I walked in and there was this huge 20’ x 20’ backdrop with my artwork on it and tons of kids running around holding the poster and shirt I designed. The band toured with that artwork for a few years and really put me out there to a lot of new people. All that led to doing work for the Warped Tour.”
You can buy prints of Ewing’s work over at brianewing.com, and make sure you buy his AMAZING new book called Don’t Hold Your Breath with a retrospective of his work here.

Open Letter to the Cow Gaga Wore as a Dress, or “Who Wore It Best?”
Monday, September 20th, 2010

Dear Cow,
This letter was originally hate mail for Gaga but, as I’m sure PETA is still asking themselves, how do you pour blood on someone who is already wearing raw meat? Instead I send you this letter as a praise song. I hope you had fun at your first awards show and that you shivered when Cher got close. I hope that in some way this was the dream you always wanted to come true: walking the red carpet, posing with Ellen. You were never meant to be a small town burger in a dive bar anyway. I hope you were strutting enough for the two of you, and for a few hours you didn’t even miss the taste of grass. Most of all, I’m glad you finally got everyone to stop paying attention to that media-whore the Lipsticked Pig. She’s all gimmick anyway. Seeing you with that moon man was moooooving.
Sincerely,
People Like Me!
“My Other Ride Is a Light Cycle” T-Shirt

Glow-in-the-dark Tron shirt, anyone?
This design is so good because it appears to be your typical Tron-homage circuit board tee. But your eyes get a visual bitch-slap as the lights go off and the second pattern reveals itself! The main graphic is an accurate replica of the circuits going across Jeff Bridges’ outfit in the 1982 classic. The red glow-in-dark design represents the villain Sark’s outfit, played by the great David Warner, who also happens to be the same person who played the voice of Ra’s Al Ghul in all of the Batman: The Animated Series episodes!
…But about the design; it’s ALSO available as a hoodie. Crazy!

Monday, September 13th, 2010Fanboy Friday: Italian design for a Dresden Doll
Friday, September 10th, 2010
Today we feature a shirt from the lovely and talented Amanda Palmer, who comprises one-half of the Punk Cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Seeing as how the band just recently announced their reunion at this year’s Halloween show in Irving Plaza, I thought it’d be appropriate to highlight a shirt they’re selling. (By the way, we at the office just got our tickets and suggest you do the same. The show will be absolute insanity).
Now, onto the shirt. I was completely in love with this design from the moment I saw it during Amanda Palmer’s last tour, except it was in poster form. I love that the design doesn’t sacrifice detail despite its simple and iconic layout. It has a very vintage Art Nouveau/Psychedelic quality to it which not many people can pull off (either in illustration OR typography).
It was created by the design trio Malleous, who hails from Tortona in Italy. According to their website, it states that they have “set out to enrich the world of rock poster art.” If you take a look at the rest of their work, all of the posters have a very distinctly similar style. But they do it so well, I don’t think anyone minds.
