This past Friday, People Like Me’s prettier half ventured into the Slice-of-Pie town known as Montclair to see the band Beirut. If you aren’t familiar, its this crazy polka-driven rock fronted by singer/instrumentalist Zachary Francis Condon. What happened when the show started, however, was something we didn’t expect.
Instead of the full band and horn section we expected to fill the stage, a lonesome girl by the name of Aly Spaltro approached, guitar in hand.
She plugged in, tuned up, and didn’t hesitate to start unloading haunting and beautiful music at the audience. I think the entire theater felt like us as we stood in shock from the awesome sound that this person was creating with just her voice and a guitar. We enjoyed a three course meal of amazing lyrics, backed by impressive guitar strums and a voice that you felt was coming from the bottom of her soul. She informed the audience of her One Man Band’s name, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. I didn’t hear it the first time when the announcer introduced her, nor this time when she said it herself. I think my ears were still buzzing from the music I had just heard. It wasn’t until later when we got the chance to meet her in person and gush for a few minutes, that we got the name of her band etched into our minds forever.
After a brief wait, Beirut approached the stage, flugelhorn and ukulele in hand. These guys were ready to liven up the crowd a little bit, and were every bit as good as you’d want them to be. They played all of the favorites, Nantes, Elephant Gun, A Sunday Smile, Postcards from Italy, you name it! And occasionally each band member would either swap an instrument, or hop on the keyboards if necessary. Here’s a clip of them in action:
Great Show. Great Opening Act. Great Headliner. What more could you ask for?
Guerrilla comedic group Improv Everywhere has been on the scene for years, doing public acts such as filling the NYC Subway system with mobs of pant-less riders. This time, the group invaded the GEL 2011 Social Media Conference with a hilarious musical entitled “Gotta Share”; commenting on our generation’s need to stay connected everywhere they go.

Right now, many of your fellow Avengers are getting their time to shine in the spotlight. After years of the yellow-and-black dominating popular culture as a symbol for comics, people are now realizing how much substance lies within the stories of these heroes. Much like yourself; how many different lives have you lived? How many names have you carried? James, Logan,Wolverine, Weapon X, Mai’Keth, and my personal favorite: Emilio Garra.Your back-story was so deep and important, that it carried throughout most of the animated series. The Phoenix Saga only got 3 episodes! You’ve even managed to help make a son and a daughter/female clone throughout your run. You are the poster child for the bad ass comic book super hero; the one who isn’t afraid to slice someone’s hand off and grab a beer afterward. Captain America couldn’t do that. Tony Stark couldn’t hold his own against you, even with his alcoholism. The mystery of how you grow your hair in that wing tip aerodynamic style baffles stylists to this day. Thank you for daring to be Canadian in a world full of mutants.
If you have 23 minutes of your life to spare and want to enjoy an awesome Fantasy/Steampunky/Romantic short film based on the little known backstory of the Tin Man, then watch THIS! Put on your PLM Heartless T-Shirt, grab the popcorn and enjoy! Hearthless: The Story of the Tin Man, is produced by a group of young film directors/producers/cameramen/composers/writers that work under the name Whitestone Motion Pictures.
From Whitestone’s site:
L. Frank Baum wrote the back story to the Tin Woodsman in his book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Heartless: The Story of the Tin Man is Whitestone Motion Pictures retelling this little known story of the tragic arc of a beloved character who was once human, made of flesh and blood that turned into tin.

Now, we here at People Like Me pride ourselves in fighting the good fight against the taboo and mundane. However, as much as we try to pry ourselves from this simple yet amazingly executed graphic tee, we cannot. The concept is not original by any means, however the style and presentation is where it gets the bonus points. The Comic-esque use of shading and negative space to create the illustrated body evokes a stark sense of…whatever you interpret it as. The juxtaposition of the colorful butterflies coming to life from the splatter catches the eye while merging the two parts.
Boy Meets World was the type of show that grew up with the audience. Those awkward years of high school helped make your viewers feel more comfortable in their own dorky skin. Except for having super cool teachers like Feeny and Turner, many of your mishaps made even the worst day at school laughable. I mean, what’s worse than being bullied around by members of Rilo Kiley? Your friends and family were like a bunch of after school specials: full of life lessons and wisdom. Your lifelong partner in crime Shawn was as loyal as they come, and you were always there to stop him from doing something illegal. Maybe Eric wasn’t too full of wisdom, but I’m sure you learned a few valuable lessons on what not to do from him. And who can forget your first kiss with Topanga? It looked like your hairstyles were going to consume the both of you.
Even though this was not the first TV series starring a Savage which dealt with adolescence, it was by far the funniest. The relationships that grew along with your character were unforgettable, and showed a generation that it was O.K. to not be the most popular person in school. Because even if you do have Brillo Hair, you can end up with the person of your dreams and a happy ending.
P.S. – Let’s not forget your Arch Nemesis, STUART MINKUS!
This design takes the phrase “water balloon” and turns it on its head. Each creature is unique and colorful with a bit of life in their little bubbles. The water coloring effect of the colors make the design look like it was sketched in just a few minutes. However, it is easy to notice how much time was spent adding little details like the bubbles, the glare of the water that gives us that balloon effect, and the amount of colors added to each of the animals floating around. You can find this shirt over at Threadless.
I just wanted to take the time out to personally applaud your accomplishments as an advocate, an actor, and a green lump of clay. Not many in the business can say they’ve had their own series spanning 35 years, on almost every major network out there. And not once in those 35 years did you decide to stop wearing bell bottoms; just proof of what a trendsetter you were. Even your hair style helped define a culture in the 1980’s.
Holy Toledo!
Not only did you make your mark in fashion, but you spun the literary world on its head. Children were amazed at the adventures you had inside famous titles. Since people are not made of clay and could not magically enter the worlds of books to experience them, we were forced to actually use our imagination and read the words inside! Who can forget the episode where you learned The Golden Rule by entering the book about the Golden Fleece?! Or the episode when you save Christmas from Scrooge and the Blockheads? All of these adventures made the stories interesting and fresh in the minds of the audience. Along with Pokey, Prickley, and your dog Nopey (who could never agree with you on anything), your adventures helped entertain more than one generation of young minds. Thank you.
Canadian upstart Flower Children revolves around artist Jerome Gagnon and his illustrations. The company’s feel is a mix between Where the Wild Things Are and the Hippie Movement. His illustrations have a sense of whimsy & fun while still being artistic. This design, entitled “The Psychologist”, places different pairs of subjects throughout a Rube Goldberg-esque structure. The overall design of the structure balances the palette of red, blue, and orange by evenly placing the color throughout, and leaving just enough white to give it some depth. The lines are very broad and smooth, allowing for the eyes to wander through the different pathways and stairs into confusion. You can check out this shirt and more on Flower Children’s official website.
Independent film Director/Actor Edward Burns (The Brothers McMullen, She’s The One, Sidewalks of New York) recently announced that his new film, Newlyweds, will be closing out this year’s Tribeca Film Festival. Lacking an official poster for the film, Burns reached out to his fans to design a poster for the film’s release. David jumped at the chance to design something special for the contest, and submitted the poster above a few days ago. Because of the amount of new poster submissions, the voting period for the contest has been extended to this Friday.
